Frequently asked questions
Why does a video show no tags?+
Tags are optional and many channels leave them blank, especially large ones that rank on title and topic alone. YouTube also hides them on some videos. An empty result usually means there is genuinely nothing there.
Do tags still matter for ranking?+
Only a little. YouTube has said tags play a minimal role and mainly help with common misspellings of your topic. Your title, thumbnail and how long people watch matter far more.
Can I just copy another channel's tags?+
You can, but it rarely helps. Tags describe your video to YouTube, so tags that do not match your content are noise at best. Use another video's tags to understand how the topic is described, then write your own.
How many tags should I use?+
YouTube allows up to 500 characters of tags in total. Ten to fifteen accurate ones fill that comfortably. Stuffing in dozens of loosely related terms breaks YouTube's own guidance on misleading metadata.
