Uploading something close to the right size usually works, but YouTube then does the resizing for you, and its compression is not kind to text or fine detail. Sending the exact dimensions is the difference between a crisp logo and a slightly blurry one.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube profile picture be?+

800×800 pixels, uploaded as a square PNG or JPG under 4MB. YouTube displays it as a circle, so keep faces and logos near the centre and expect the corners to be cut off.

What is the branding watermark size?+

150×150 pixels, under 1MB. It appears over your videos as a subscribe button, so a transparent PNG with a simple mark works far better than a detailed logo with text.

What is the difference between fill and fit?+

Fill crops the image to cover the whole frame, which is right for profile pictures and banners where empty space looks wrong. Fit shrinks the whole image inside the frame and pads the rest, which is right for a watermark or logo you cannot afford to crop.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?+

No. The resizing happens in your browser using a canvas. The file never leaves your device, which also means the tool works on a slow connection.
