How to Make a YouTube Banner for Free, Step by Step

4 min read · By Zaher Khan

You do not need Photoshop, a Canva subscription or a designer to get a clean channel banner. A browser and ten minutes cover it. This guide walks through the whole job in order, using our free banner generator, and ends with the upload itself.

Before starting, decide on three things: your channel name exactly as you want it displayed, one short line saying what the channel is about, and two colours that feel like your channel. Everything else follows from those.

Step 1: start the canvas

Open the banner generator. The canvas is already the right size, 2560 by 1440 pixels, which is what YouTube recommends and what TVs display in full. The dashed rectangle in the middle is the safe area, the only part guaranteed to show on phones. It is drawn as a guide on screen and never appears in your exported file.

Step 2: set the background

Pick a background colour or upload a photo. If you use a photo, remember that only the centre band survives on mobile, so choose an image that still makes sense when most of its top and bottom are cut away. A solid colour or soft gradient is the safer starting point, and it keeps your text readable, which matters more than the background ever will.

Step 3: add your text and place it

Placement is the step people rush. Text that touches the dashed border will sit at the very edge of the screen on phones, so leave breathing room inside the line, not just technically within it.

  • Add your channel name first and make it the biggest thing on the canvas
  • Add the one-line description under it, clearly smaller
  • Drag both fully inside the dashed safe area
  • If you keep a real upload schedule, add it as a third small line

Step 4: export and upload

Download the banner as a PNG at 2560 by 1440. Then open studio.youtube.com, go to Customisation, then Branding, and under Banner image click Upload. YouTube shows a preview of how the image crops on TV, desktop and mobile before you confirm. If your text sits inside the safe area, all three previews will look right, and you press Publish.

Frequently asked questions

Is the generator actually free, or is there a watermark?+

Free, no watermark, no account. The exported PNG contains only your design. The dashed guides you see while editing are not part of the file.

My upload was rejected as too small. What happened?+

YouTube refuses banners under 2048 by 1152 pixels. Files from our generator export at 2560 by 1440, so this only happens with images resized or screenshotted afterwards. Upload the original download and it will pass.
